A yearlong investigation by The Associated Press (AP) found that roughly 17,000 official reports of sexual assaults by students in grades K-12 over a four-year period.
The schools in Los Angeles County are not immune to these types of sexual assaults and poor response of the school districts. Nationwide, thousands of students have been sexually assaulted by other students and as the article describes, it is a hidden horror educators have long been warned not to ignore.
According to the article, sexual assaults in K-12 schools are widely known to be underreported and of those that are reported, many reports of sexual assault are improperly investigated and poorly acted upon, leaving the students who do come forward with little protection from the law or in their schools and the victims and their families with few choices.
Hinman Law Group recently filed a lawsuit in Covina, CA against South Hills High School and Covina-Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) for one of their clients, a freshman student who was a victim of rape and ongoing bullying and cyber bullying and sexual harassment.
As alleged in the lawsuit, it took more than two months for our client to work up the courage to come forward and when she did the school district took no action against the perpetrator, forcing our client’s parents to withdraw her from her school out of concern for her safety.
At Hinman Law Group, we are proud to join the fight for the rights of victims of sexual assault and ensure that they have a voice and are afforded the protections and justice they deserve.
